Handmade Macramé on Kythera, Greece

About me

My name is Tamara. I live with my husband Niko and our daughter on the Greek island of Kythera—an island set between the Peloponnese and Crete, shaped by sea winds, quiet light, and a slower rhythm of life. It has long been a crossroads of sailors and cultures, and you can still feel it today in the island’s character and architecture, where Aegean simplicity meets Venetian influence.

I fell in love with handmade craft as a child, watching my grandmother work with patience and care. That sense of calm, repetition, and meaning stayed with me. Today I continue that tradition through macramé—designing and crafting each piece slowly by hand using natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and silk.

Why Kythera inspires my work

Kythera is the kind of place that invites you to breathe deeper and create more consciously. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, from vivid spring colors to the softer tones of autumn, and that constant dialogue with nature naturally leads me toward thoughtful, eco-minded handwork and natural materials.

Kythera is often described as a hidden gem, with unspoilt beaches, villages, and living traditions that are still part of everyday life. It’s a place where you’re encouraged to move slowly—walk, notice textures, follow old paths, and appreciate what’s made to last.

There’s also a small symbol of Kythera that I love: Sempreviva, the little yellow “everlasting” flower. Its name comes from the Italian words meaning “always” and “to live,” and it’s connected with the idea of enduring color and eternal love—exactly the feeling I want my handmade pieces to carry

Learn macramé with me (my course)

Over time, I realized that many people don’t just want to buy handmade—they want to learn it, too. So I created my own macramé course for anyone who feels drawn to slow, mindful craft and wants to master the basics (and beyond) step by step.
In the course, I share my process, the essential knots, guidance on materials, and the small details that make handmade work look clean, balanced, and professional.

Thank you for being here and supporting handmade work created with love, time, and attention to every detail.
